Difference Between Color Correction and Color Grading
Color Correction and Color Grading
Filmmakers traditionally altered film colors by applying some chemicals on the film materials. In this digital age, the color alteration has evolved with modern and comprehensive software and expensive hardware. After all, both post-production processes use the same tools, the key difference lies in the reason you process the color and when you do it. Color correction and Color grading are often used synonymously as terms for the process and can include the creation of artistic color effects through compositing and creative blending of different images.
Understand the Color Correction and Color Grading Process
Color Correction
Color correction is technical processes that fixes color problems and makes the footage appear as naturalistic as possible. The idea is for colors to look real and clean, as human eyes would see them in the real world.
The Process of color correction is used in television, cinematography, photography, stage lighting and other disciplines, which uses color gels or filters to change the overall color of the light.
Without color correction gels a scene may have a mixture of multiple colors. Applying color correction gels in front of light sources can change the color of the various light sources to match. Mixed lighting can produce an undesirable aesthetic when displayed on a television or in a theatre.
To give a more natural appearance to scene gels may also be used to tint lights for artistic effect by simulating the mix of color temperatures that occur naturally.
Color Grading
Color grading is also a technical process, but it's more of a creative concern. The color grading process adds the environment and effect to shots by coloring footage in new, often unnatural ways.
The process of color grading is of improving the overall look of an image for display in different environments on different materials. Various attributes of an image such as saturation, color, contrast, detail, white point and black level may be enhanced whether for motion photos, videos or still images.
Now color grading process is performed in a digital either in a controlled environment such as a color suite or in any location or scene where a computer can be used for dim lighting.
Difference between Color Correction and Color Grading
There are two main types of color manipulation and their names are often used interchangeably. Color correction and color grading both are similar in their technical process but different in how and when they are used.
1. Color Correction
Color correction is a single process that involves making adjustments to an image to “correct” any deviations from its standard appearance. These Color corrections include:
Exposure
ISO Noise
Contrast
White Balance
It can be used to cover the overall mistakes made with camera settings as well as to pull more details from the flat-profile. You can quickly correct the total footage whenever possible, as it creates cohesion between shots.
2. Color Grading
Color grading is a multi-process that can change the visual tone of an entire film. Once the footage is corrected, you can work to improve the aesthetics and thematic. Grading is used more like a brush to paint a picture with purpose. These include:
Shot Matching
Shape Masks
Removing Objects
Cinematic Looks (flashbacks, day-to-night, underwater, etc…)
Color correction can be used to cover the overall mistakes made with camera settings as well as to pull out more details from flat-profiles. You should correct your footage color whenever feasible as it creates cohesion between shots.
